The painter is coming and you haven’t chosen the color yet. Uh oh! Making a mistake with the color means you will have to live with it or pay more for the painter to change it. Paint color isn’t like a pair of shoes you can throw back in the closet and not wear today. You will see it every day… and so, this choice is important.
There is so much information out there to be had regarding color selection. The paint companies effectively coach you with colors that coordinate well and spend millions of dollars on photography meant to entice you in to making that look your own. Is it a problem that you don’t own the furnishings in the picture, have the same lighting or configuration of the room? You betcha. But with just a little tailoring to make the plan goof proofed, the inspiration could hit the sweet spot.
I like to narrow down color choices with my clients by first determining a color palette. That means 3 colors that work well together. A base, complimentary and accent. Start with an inspiration piece using existing furnishings or life experience. Is the reason you gravitate toward a color because of a positive memory? That is something to celebrate.
What if the budget prohibits you from a total redo but you want a new look? You don’t have to have a clean slate and start from scratch to tweak a color palette. Changing the color values can be a big change and not as huge an expense as starting over. Would your existing furnishings still work if your paint color were 2 shades darker? Can you handle the color change? Is a complimentary color for an accent wall a better fit?
